(SD)-Pine Ridge Man Pleads Guilty In Res Shooting Death
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A Pine Ridge Reservation man has pleaded guilty in the shooting death last November of another man on the reservation.
Under a plea agreement, federal prosecutors reduced the charges against 26-year-old Thomas Brewer of Pine Ridge from 2nd-degree murder to voluntary manslaughter and discharge of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence.
Brewer admitted shooting Shawn Stevens with a pistol during an early morning argument on Nov 30th. No date has been set for his sentencing..
Brewer was on the FBI's most-wanted list when he was arrested in mid-December at a Rapid City hotel by Rapid City and Pennington County officers acting on a tip.
Court papers say the fatal incident began when Stevens and his wife heard a car outside their home, looked out, and saw an SUV "spinning cookies" near their parked car.
Stevens, a friend, and Brewer, who was the driver, exchanged words and Brewer flashed a gun from inside the vehicle. Witnesses said he then drove home down the street, parked, and walked back with his 3 passengers to shoot Stevens once in the stomach.
Stevens was driven to the Pine Ridge IHS Hospital by a friend and later died during surgery after being airlifted to Rapid City Regional Hospital.
