CHADRON - 29-year-old Trevor Teichroeb of Bayard has been sentenced to 24-months probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanor vehicular homicide for the death of 68-year old Barbara Fritzler of Alliance in a traffic accident last October 18th caused by inattentive driving.

County Judge Russ Harford also ordered Teichroeb to speak as part of at least 4 inattentive driver classes during his probation, to participate in victim impact mediation with Fritzler's two daughters, and to send letters to Harford on the anniversary of the accident, which was also Frizler's birthday, about the impact it has had on him and the Fritzler family.

Teichroeb must also pay $3,500 restitution for the cost of Fritzler's cremation and spend the final 90 days of his probation in jail, but Harford said he would waive the 90 days if Teichroeb went above and beyond the minimum in meeting the terms of his probation.

One of Fritzler's daughter was present for the sentencing but did not speak, although she'd submitted a written statement. Teichroeb, near tears, apologized to her and everyone else connected with the case.

In the advice of legal counsel, because of possible civil suits, it was the first time Teichroeb had apologized for the accident and Fritzler's death.

Defense attorney Mauren Chaloupka asked for probation, emphasizing that Teichroeb had not been speeding, texting, or under the influence - only inattentive. Deputy Scotts Bluff County Attorney David Broderick said the state had agreed not contest any sentence as part of a plea agreement.

Judge Harford took the case when the two county judges in Scotts Bluff County recused themselves because of personal connections to the defendant. Sentencing was held at the Dawes County Courthouse in Chadron because of scheduling issues in Scotts Bluff County.

The accident occurred as Teichroeb was driving a pickup in a construction zone on U.S. Highway 26, about a mile and a half east of Minatare, when he rear-ended Fritzler, who was waiting for a pilot vehicle. .

The Nebraska State Patrol said Teichroeb's pickup knocked Fritzler's car it into the vehicle ahead of it and she suffered fatal injuries.

Fritzler was pronounced dead at the scene while Teichroeb had to be extricated from his vehicle. He was flown by medical helicopter to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff with serious injuries including a broken leg.
