(Neb)-It's National Peace Officer Memorial Day Listen
This is National Police Week. The Chadron City Council issued a proclamation for the week at its last meeting two weeks ago.
Today is Peace Officers Memorial Day with all U.S. and state flags flying at half-staff until sunset.
The annual ceremony for Peace Officers Memorial Day at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. was held yesterday with some 30,000 people in attendance.
The names of 394 officers killed in the line of duty were added to the memorial this year - 143 who died last year and 251 others who died before 2016 but whose names had never been added to the memorial.
With this year's additions, there are now 21,183 names engraved on the memorial representing all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, federal law enforcement and military police agencies.
Leading into National Police Week on Saturday night was the 29th annual Candlelight Vigil on the National Mall. U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly spoke at the event and lead the crowd in the candle lighting.
