(Neb)-Gering Native Named Fire Chief
GERING - A 17-year veteran of the Gering Volunteer Fire Department has been named its new chief and fire marshal. 38-year old Gering native Nathan Flowers succeeds Jay Templar, who retired after 50 years of service to the department. He'll officially take over in 2 weeks on the 25th.
Flowers has been assistant chief the past five years, but was just 21 when joined his father as a member of the Gering department in 2000. He says he liked the initial thrill of responding to emergencies, then found each new responsibility brought new excitement.
In recent years, Flowers has been training firefighters from other agencies...accepting an offer to become a part-time instructor for the State Fire Marshal's Office in 2011 and leading classes in communities from Crawford to Kimball to Grand Island. He also began teaching EMT classes at Western Nebraska Community College two years ago.
