(SD)- BHSU Hillside Gets Lakota Name
SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) - Black HIlls State University in Spearfish has named a renovated hillside on campus "Oyate Wicaka Wita," a Lakota name meaning "People/Nation Gathering Place."
University President Tom Jackson Jr told the Black Hills Pioneer naming the hillside connects the school to the Spearfish community and to the Lakota heritage of the Black Hills. The new sidewalk and landscaping also added a walkway and bike path to the university entrance.
During a dedication ceremony last month, the area was smudged and purified with sage in a traditional Lakota blessing with tobacco and water placed at the base of a tree on the hillside to represent life, thanksgiving and blessings.
