(Neb)-Omaha Mayoral Race Showing National Democratic Party Split
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Tuesday is election day in Omaha with the runoff for mayor between incumbent Republican Jean Stothert and former state senator Heath Mello, a Democrat.
The 37-year old Mello is seen as a future statewide candidates for the Democrats, who hold no statewide or congressional offices.
He's portrayed as a pragmatic, next generation leader but his anti-abortion stance has become a flashpoint for the national party...exposing cultural divisions among Democrats over abortion and proving a major embarrassment for the new party chairman, Tom Perez.
Perez and other top national Democrats had planned a stop in Omaha at a rally for Mello, but abortion rights groups were outraged and Perez cancelled the stop. Still, Mello still has the endorsement of U-S Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
