CHADRON - Dawes County Attorney/Coroner Vance Haug says longtime area rancher and former Dawes County Commissioner Gilbert Nitsch died over the weekend of apparent heart-related issues. The 74 year old Nitsch was found dead at his rural residence shortly before 6:00 Saturday evening.

.    Haug says he and the Dawes County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the Nitsch residence after his body was found. A review of the evidence collected at the scene, witness statements, medical records and interviews with medical personnel led to a preliminary determination of natural causes.

Nitsch had dealt with heart issues for several years and at one point had to be flown to Rapid City by Flight For Life.

Nitsch was first elected county commissioner in 1994 and was reelected in both 1998 and 2002 before deciding not seek to reelection in 2006.
