(SD)-Investigation Continues Into Chase And Fatal Police Shootout
KYLE, S.D. (AP) - The FBI, BIA, and Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety are investigating police chase and shootout that began Friday night and ended early Saturday morning on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation with the suspect dead at the hands of law enforcement.
An FBI statement released Wednesday identified him as Jeffrey Lynn Curry Jr of Allen, with an FBI spokesman saying he had no additional information other than the investigation is ongoing.
A separate statement released Wednesday by Oglala Sioux President Troy "Scott" Weston that did not include Curry's name said that the chase began with Bennett County law enforcement, then was taken over by tribal police as Curry entered tribal jurisdiction. It also says Curry fired multiple shots "at random occasions" at officers.
Tribal Police Chief Harry Martinez told the Rapid City Journal the chase ended in a field southwest of Kyle and that Curry stayed in the car as FBI and BIA agents arrived on the scene and began what the chief called "a couple hours of negotiating."
Martinez said officers eventually approached the vehicle, Curry got out, more shots were exchanged, and Curry was killed. The chief told the paper at least 11 tribal officers were involved in the incident and have been placed on administrative leave, but he referred all further questions to the FBI.
