(Neb)-Ricketts Proclaims Neb As "Best Turkey Hunting Destination"
LINCOLN - Governor Pete Ricketts signed a proclamation Wednesday declaring Nebraska as the Best Turkey Hunting Destination in the United States. Although it's a self-made boast, the claim of being the best stems from a recent survey of Nebraska turkey hunters that saw 90% say they had a satisfying experience.
Among the positives cited were two lengthy seasons - 68 days in the spring and 139 in the fall, unlimited permits with each hunter able to get up to 3 for the spring season and 2 for the fall, an abundant turkey population with more than 400,000 acres of land open to public hunting and opportunities in all 93 counties, and reduced price youth turkey permits.
There were 42,431 turkey permits sold last year, about a third of them to out of state hunters. Hunting overall is big business in Nebraska with an $848 million dollar annual financial impact...aiding the economies of towns large and small.
The spring archery turkey season is already underway with the spring shotgun season beginning on Saturday. All the spring turkey seasons close May 31st. Turkey permits may be purchased online at OutdoorNebraska.org.
Governor Ricketts signed the proclamation in a ceremony at the Capitol and was in turn presented with a turkey call by Nebraska Game and Parks District 1 Dan Kreitman of Wahoo. Ricketts vowed to use the call on an upcoming turkey hunt.
