(Neb)-Alliance Man Gets 40-To-Life For Killing Brother
GERING - An Alliance man has been sentenced to 40 years-to-life on a 2nd-degree murder conviction for stabbing his older brother to death in a drunken argument last year at the brother's home in Gering.
41 year old William Reed was also given a consecutive term of 10-to-20 years for felony use of a weapon. He will be eligible for parole in 25 years.
Reed testified at his trial in Scotts Bluff County District Court that he couldn't remember any details of his attack on his 42-year old brother Christopher until he woke up from a blackout and saw his brother 'in mid-fall , eyes closed" and found himself falling on top of him.
At sentencing Thursday morning, Reed told Judge Leo Dobrovolny that “I just think of my mom and all she has had to endure,” before adding “I’m forgiven in God’s eyes” and that he loves his brothers.
County Attorney Dave Eubanks said after the sentencing that he was satisfied with its length because Reed hasn't taken full responsibility for what Eubanks called "the savagery of the offense,” and instead still maintains he should have been convicted of manslaughter instead of murder.
