CHADRON- One suspect is in custody and 3 others are being sought following a foiled burglary early Wednesday morning on the west side of Chadron that may be connected to a recent series of burglaries in Chadron, Gordon, and Rushville. All 4 are male teenagers from Pine Ridge, S.D.
Sergeant Aron Chrisman says one 17-year old is being held at a juvenile detention facility in northeast Nebraska for burglary, attempted burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and trespassing.
Police are still looking for 2 other 17-year olds and 18-year old Laney Bacon, who may be driving an SUV stolen in Gordon. Bacon was already wanted by Chadron police in connection with a number of thefts from homes and cars in Chadron several weeks ago that included the theft of 3 vehicles, all of which were recovered.
Sgt Chrisman says police were called about 3:30 am by homeowner Kerry Bailey, who said several individuals had been in his garage and that 4 people wearing black hoodies had run out through the garage door. Officers responded immediately, but were unable to locate the four.
Chadron police received another call from the same neighborhood about 7:30 Wednesday morning about another burglary. The responding officers searched the nearby area and found all the items taken in that burglary plus a backpack with more apparently stolen items, including keys to several vehicles in Chadron and Gordon. The backpack itself had been stolen in an early string of Chadron incidents.
The second victim called again about 10:15 to say a male in a black hoodie had just been at the site where the stolen items had been recovered. Officers again responded and this time found the suspect and took the 17-year old into custody.
Chrisman says "the investigation is still ongoing and there is a strong correlation to the thefts and burglaries that have occurred in Gordon, Rushville, and Chadron involving stolen cars, dirt bikes, 4-wheelers, guns and electronics."
Pine Ridge police provided a photograph of Bacon and Chrisman is asking the public for any information on his whereabouts. Authorities believe Bacon is back on the reservation, possibly in a stolen black Chevy Equinox SUV, Nebraska license 61-E562.
Anyone with information on Bacon or the two other suspects is asked to call the Chadron Police Department, any other law enforcement agency, or nebraskacrimestoppers.com. Tips that lead to an arrest and conviction may be eligible for rewards, even if made anonymously.
