(Neb)-Gering Woman Charged With Fleecing Her Grandfather Out Of $250K
GERING - A Gering businesswoman has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than a quarter of a million dollars from her grandfather over a 4-year period.
33-year-old Stacia Keener, owner of Stacia's Studio in Monument Mall, is charged with 3 felony counts - one of Theft by Deception of more than $5,000 and two counts of 2nd Degree Forgery of more than $5,000. She's being held on $250,000 bond.
Court documents say Keener's 84-year old grandfather told Gering police in January that he had loaned her money several times for what now seemed to be false reasons, starting with paying the IRS and hiring an attorney to get money from her employer's retirement fund...a story backed up by what proved to be a fake email from an actual attorney in Colorado who knew nothing about it.
The grandfather gave police a spreadsheet that a pair of forged checks made out to Keener totaling about $14,000...a $96,000 transfer from his credit union account to hers, multiple transfers of $9-to-30,000 over an 18 month period...and a loan in 2015 where he was told he was just a co-signer but turned out to be the primary borrower and Keener a third party.
The court affidavit shows investigators interviewed family members and found that Keener and her family had taken several vacations during the period of the alleged thefts, with Keener telling those who'd asked that she was getting them free as part of a job with a Georgia company setting up conferences.
