LEMOYNE, Neb. (AP) - A weekend wildfire burned at least 500 acres and destroyed at least 8 homes and several other buildings near the northeast corner of Lake McConaughy, north of Ogallala in Keith County.
Keystone Lemoyne Fire & Rescue Fire Chief Ralph Moul (mowl) says the fire was reported about 11:30 Saturday night and controled around 6:00 Sunday morning, then rekindled before noon and wasn't controled again until last evening with firefighters monitoring hot spots overnight.
Most of the losses occurred yesterday afternoon as more than 100 firefighters from over a dozen agencies were battling the fire...pushed along quickly by stiff winds.
Chief Moul says the Nebraska State Patrol helped a number of rural residents evacuate as flames raced their way and that several firefighters were treated for minor injuries.
Investigators suspect the original fire Saturday was caused by overheated wheel bearings on a vehicle.
