GERING - Gering school district patrons vote tomorrow on a $24 million dollar bond issue to expand and renovate the high school to allow it to add 9th graders.
Gering is the only district in Nebraska with a 10-12th grade high school and 7th-9th grade junior high, and bond issue supporters say it's an arrangement that puts Gering students at an educational disadvantage because the roughly 1-mile between the schools keeps freshmen from being to take advance classes at the high school.
To accommodate the 150 to 170 freshmen who would come in, the 51-year old Gering High building would add a new classroom wing while renovations to the existing building would include an upgraded HVAC system, secure front entrance, additional commons and cafeteria space, and modifications to the media center, weight room, and locker rooms.
