(SD)-Grant To Research Veterans At Black Hills National Cemetery
SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) - Black Hills State University in Spearfish has been awarded a $74,000 contract to research stories of veterans buried at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, including the circumstances of their service.
The contract from the VA's National Cemetery Administration is part of the Veterans Legacy Program.
Black Hills State Professor Cody Lawson says one goal is to find living relatives of the veterans, adding that he hopes his 15 education students can help develop a history curriculum for elementary school students based on the research.
The Black Hills Cemetery opened in 1948 and contains the remains or ashes of over 27,500 individuals.
