(Neb)-Outage Ends Early, No Significant Problems Reported
CHADRON - Nebraska Public Power District citywide shutdown of the Chadron electrical system Wednesday night came off pretty much without a hitch.
After 2 failed tries Tuesday night to replace failed equipment, the outage started just about on time at 7:30 and ended about 20-minutes earlier that expected around 10:10.
The outage covered all NPPD service in and adjacent to Chadron as well as Northwest Rural Public Power District customers from the state line to Table Road and Highway 385 west to Hawthorne Road.
Emergency generators at the KCSR/KBPY studios and the KCSR transmitter are allowing both stations to remain on the air with music, CBS news, and a few updates about the outage.
When the power was first cut, a large number of vehicles were driving around...possibly to see what Chadron looks like with no lights - including street lights.
The lone exception, not counting individual homes with generators, were the traffic signals at the intersection of 3rd Street/Highway 20 and Main Street, which remained in operation.
Switching from the grid to a generator did knock out the KCSR/KBPY/Chadrad Communications phone system and it will likely be mid-morning at the earliest before it's restored.
