(Neb.)-**City-Wide Power Outage In Chadron Back On Again 8 PM**
UPDATE - 6:50 NPPD says the work is too important to delay, so its crews will work with WAPA crews. Outage now scheduled for 8 pm.
CHADRON - Nebraska Public Power District says the power to the entire city of Chadron will be shut off for an undetermined length of time this evening, but officials aren't sure when the outage will begin or when it will end.
NPPD Corporate Media and Media Services Supervisor Mark Becker says the utility's local supervisor told him a bus support at one of the Chadron substations has failed and needs to be replaced on an emergency basis.
The equipment is owned by WAPA, the federal Western Area Power Administration, which has a crew en route from Gering to do the work, but Becker says the crew's arrival and set-up time aren't clear.
Normally, when NPPD needs to do work at one of the Chadron substations, outages are done by sections of the community, but Becker says the substations are "common coupled" and for this procedure must be shut down at the same time.
The faulty bus support is near an energized line, which Becker says increases the danger of an uncontrolled outage that could damage computers, appliances, and other electric devices. He recommends turning off or unplugging those items as a precaution.
Normally, KCSR and KBPY would remain on the air using backup generators, but the KCSR generator is currently down so only KBPY will remain on the air during the outage.
NPPD will contact us before the outage begins and we will pass that information along on the air and on chadrad.com.
