(Neb)-Swimmers And City Pleased With Opening Day Of Aquatics Center
CHADRON - The new Chadron Area Aquatics and Wellness Center, some four years in planning and construction, opened to the public quietly and without fanfare Monday and the results pleased both city officials and swimmers.
The center, which converted the city's outdoor swimming pool into an indoor facility, is having a soft opening this week with just a limited schedule that began Monday with lap swimming from 6-8:00 and noon-1:00, followed by an Open Swim from 3-to-6:00.
Chadron zoning and building officer Janet Johnson told the city council last night that about a half dozen people took advantage of each of the lap swim session while the Open Swim drew 85.
Johnson said lifeguard Jamie McLain told her it was probably a bigger crowd than any day in 2015, the last season the pool was open as an outdoor facility.
In addition to the swimmers, Johnson said several more people came into the Aquatics Center to buy passes or to get more information and left saying they would be back to swim later in the week.
Admission is budgeted to bring in about $120,000 in passes and fees, and Johnson said about $12,000 has already come in.
The limited schedule has Lap Swimming today through Friday from 6-8:00 am and noon-1:00 plus Open Swim from 3-8:00. The weekend will have Lap Swim from noon-1:00 both days and Open Swim from 1-6:00 on Saturday and 1-5:00 on Sunday. The regular schedule starts on Monday.
