(Neb)-Illinois Police Make Arrest In Scottsbluff Murder Case
SCOTTSBLUFF - Police in Bradley, Illinois - about 60 miles south of Chicago - have arrested a Scottsbluff man for the New Year's Eve stabbing death of a woman in a Scottsbluff apartment complex.
Scottsbluff Police Chief Kevin Spencer says extradition proceedings on charges of 1st-degree murder and felony use of a deadly weapon are pending against 64-year old Lucio Munoz.
Spencer says an autopsy shows 48-year Melissa May, who lived in the same apartment complex, was killed between midnight and 3 a-m New Year's Eve, but her body remained undiscovered in Munoz's apartment until Tuesday when police received a call for a welfare check.
That led the investigation to Munoz and Illinois, where he has family. Bradley Police Chief Michael Johnston told KNEB radio that Munoz was found at a relative's home and was arrested without resistance.
Chief Spencer says that because of the distance and cost, Bradley police are conducting the initial interviews with Munoz.
Spencer says his officers collected several knives at the murder scene and is awaiting test results on whether one of them is the murder weapon.
Munoz is being held on $2-million dollars bond with his first court appearance in Illinois set for today.
