(SD)-Rapid City Records Homicide 2 Hours Into New Year
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - After recording only 2 homicides in all of 2016, it took just over 2 hours for Rapid City to have its first of 2017 and to have a suspect taken into custody.
Rapid City police were called to a home on the city's northeast side for a disturbance a little after 2:00 New Year's Day morning and found 3 people who appeared to be have been shot or stabbed, or both.
Pronounced dead at the scene from an apparent stabbing was 20-year old Juan Legarda Jr of Rapid City while the other 2 were taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital with what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries. There's been no update on their condition
A release from the Rapid City Police Department says 26-year-old Joseph Rich, also of Rapid City, was arrested for 2nd degree murder and 2 counts of aggravated assault assault as well as for 3 unrelated arrest warrant.
No details or suspected motive for the killing or other attacks have been release with the police department and Pennington County Sheriff's Office continuing the investigation. The case has been handed over to the Pennington County State's Attorney Office for prosecution.
