(Neb)-Three Christmas Day Tornadoes Now Confirmed
VALLEY, Neb. (AP) - The National Weather Service says it's confirmed two more Christmas Day tornadoes in south-central Nebraska, bringing the total to 3. All occurred within 40 minutes of each other over the noon hour Sunday and caused minor damage but no injuries.
The Weather Service on Tuesday confirmed one tornado, then said Friday that additional survey reports of damage showed two more had touched down as well.
The first of the 3 twisters was the first one the agency had reported, an EF1 tornado that touched down at 11:50 about 3 miles south of Funk with 100 mph winds and lifted 3 minutes later.
The two newly-confirmed tornadoes were both classified EF0 with winds estimated at 75 mph. One struck 7 miles southeast of Minden at 12:17 and lifted after 2 minutes while the other touched down at 12:24 about 4 miles west-northwest of Gibbon and stayed on the ground about 4-minutes.
The Weather Service says it's the latest in the year for a confirmed tornado in Nebraska since 1950 and the state's first December tornado since 1975.
