(SD)-OST Officer Kills Armed Man In Kyle
KYLE, S.D. (AP) - An officer with the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety is on paid administrative leave for shooting and killing a man Tuesday on the Pine Ridge Reservation after the man drew a gun on him.
U.S. Attorney for South Dakota Randy Seiler says an FBI investigation into the shooting in Kyle is ongoing, but declines to release the identity of either the OST officer or the deceased.
Seiler says the tribal officer was on patrol in Kyle when he encountered the man and that after a brief conversation, the man drew a gun on him. The officer then took out his own gun and fired at least 3 rounds, but Seiler hasn't said how many times the man was hit.
After the man was shot, authorities found he had 2 guns and between 200 and 300 rounds of ammunition on him plus an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine.
This is the fifth violent death on the Pine Ridge Reservation since June but the first involving a law enforcement officer.
