CHADRON - Enjoy our relatively mild weather while you can.  Meteorologists are warning of another arctic blast with some of the coldest air of the season during the first week of the New Year.

With such a strong possibility of frigid temperatures ahead, Chadron Fire Chief Jack Rhembrandt is asking residents to help the fire department by clearing the snow away from fire hydrants near their homes or businesses.

Rhembrandt says both plowing and the wind may have covered some hydrants with snow which could turn to ice next week, making it that much harder for firefighters in an emergency.

Rhembrandt encourages neighbors to help out if someone needs help clearing snow away from a hydrant.

Although major structure fires are rare this time of year in Chadron, the 2009 fire that destroyed a West Plains Grain elevator on 1st Street occurred December 22nd.
