(S.D.)-Colorado Man Arrested With Vehicular Homicide In Death Of Custer Man
(Custer)-A Custer man died in a one vehicle crash 14 miles south of Deadwood, on U.S. Highway 385, Tuesday, Aug. 12.
22 year old Matthew Alan Braun of Custer was a passenger in a 2013 Ford F-250 driven by 25 year old James Allen Martinez of Florence, Colorado. The two were traveling south when the pickup ran off U.S. Highway 385 to the west and traveled for approximately 80 to 90 yards before hitting a series of trees and then coming to a rest. Braun, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was killed in the crash.
Martinez, also not wearing a seatbelt, sustained minor injuries in the crash. Martinez was not at the crash scene when law enforcement arrived. He was identified as the driver through a joint investigation by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Highway Patrol.
Martinez was taken into custody during the evening hours on Tuesday, with assistance from Custer County Sheriff’s Office, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department.
He is being held in Lawrence County on a $50,000 cash bond on felony charges of vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death. The South Dakota Highway Patrol and Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office are continuing the investigation.
