(S.D.)-Blacks Hills State Planning Underground Campus
SPEARFISH, S.D. (ASSOCIATED PRESS) - Black Hills State University is planning an underground campus at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead.
The site for the Black Hills State Underground Campus will be at the 4,850-foot-deep level in the lab built in an old gold mine.
University President Kay Schallenkamp says the underground space will accommodate both undergraduate and graduate students. It will host ongoing physics and biology research, and will have space for other research identified in the future.
The university and the underground lab already have a relationship. The two plan to transform a building on the Spearfish campus into a state-of-the-art science education center.
