HOT SPRINGS, S.D. (ASSOCIATED PRESS)- The prosecutor in the case of a western South Dakota man accused of killing his mother is asking the judge presiding over the case to not grant the change of venue requested by the defense.
Prosecutor Matt Brown says 28-year-old Matthew Tornquist can have a fair trial in Hot Springs.
Defense attorney Matt Stephens has urged the judge to move the trial to nearby Rapid City. Tornquist’s trial is scheduled for July. It has been delayed in two occasions.
Tornquist faces charges of first-degree and second-degree murder as well as grand theft in the October 2011 disapearance of his mother, Catherine Tornquist, in Hot Springs. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody.
