(Neb.)-Dawes County Incumbents Have Until 4:30 Today To File For Election

By: Chris Fankhauser Posted at: 02/18/2014 09:39 AM

(Chadron)-Deadlines are quickly approaching for those wishing to hold public office in DawesCounty. Dawes County Clerk Cheryl Feist said there are several positions open throughout the county that are up for re-election, and the proper paperwork must be filed in her office in order for the names to appear on the ballots for the Primary and General Elections. The deadline for incumbents is today (Tuesday), while those wishing to challenge the incumbents have until March 3.

For the County, there are several positions that will be posted on the ballot. They include the Assessor, Attorney, Clerk, Clerk of District Court, Treasurer, Sheriff, and Commissioners for Districts 1 and 2. These are all four-year terms. For the City of Chadron, there are three 4-year positions up for re-election, and in Crawford there is one 4-year term for the North Ward and one 4-year term for the South Ward.

The Chadron School Board has three positions up for 4-year terms and the Crawford School Board also has three positions up for 4-year terms. Feist said that any incumbent wishing to resubmit their name for re-election must get their paperwork filed in the office of the County Clerk by 4:30 pm today. Anyone not currently holding office wishing to be included on the ballot must get their paperwork submitted to the County Clerk by 4:30 pm on Monday, March 3.

According to Feist, a filing fee must be filed with the County Treasurer prior to anyone submitting their paperwork for consideration of an office with the County. All prospective candidates must fill out a form in the office of the County Clerk to have their name included on the ballot for the Primary Election.

If someone is interested in the positions of County Commissioner or Crawford City Council, they must reside in the district for which they are petitioning. Feist also recommends that people do some research on the position they are running for. She said there is a lot of responsibility with each of these positions, and the job likely entails more than the general public could imagine.

The Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, May 13, at the Assumption Arena in Chadron, and the General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 4, also at the Assumption Arena.
