(CHADRON)-The 6th Annual Bird Banding Station will be held this weekend at Chadron State Park from 7:00 a.m.-noon on both Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1. Several wildlife biologists, bird specialists and enthusiasts from several agencies will host the banding station, including fun, interactive migration games and craft activities for the public to enjoy. Signs will be posted to direct visitors to the Lagoon Shelter on Saturday and at the picnic tables by the creek on Sunday.
“We had tremendous results last year, in spite of the large fires, and netted about 100 birds from more than 30 different species,” said Maggie Vinson, education coordinator for the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (RMBO). “We carefully handle each bird to weigh, measure, sex, band, and try to estimate their age. It’s very popular and exciting to have our visiting public help us release the birds. We’ve planned activities for everyone and hope lots of people join us for the day!” she said.
The Annual Bird Banding is hosted by RMBO in partnership with Chadron State Park, Nebraska Game & Parks, Nebraska Environmental Trust and the Pine Ridge Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands.
