(S.D.)-Native American Sculpture Park Draws Location Concerns

By: Roxie Graham-Marski Posted at: 02/18/2013 11:05 AM

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – A private project to build a sculpture garden featuring famous Native Americans in a prominent Rapid City spot is inching forward despite concerns from some city officials about the location.
The location in Halley Park is along two of the city’s busiest throughways, and Parks and Recreation Advisory Board members and parks department staff say parking and access to the sculpture garden would be difficult at the proposed location.
Project supporters say the garden isn’t meant to draw significant foot traffic, and they are unlikely to accept any other location for their project. Organizer Elizabeth Cook-Lynn says it’s a contemplative garden, not a tourist venue.
The proposed location is essentially the median between St. Joseph and West Main Streets.
