LINCOLN, Nebraska (AP) - York Sen. Greg Adams is promising an "agenda of fairness" in his new role as speaker of the Nebraska Legislature, even as lawmakers prepare for a tug-of-war over taxes and spending.

Adams was elected unanimously this week to the nonpartisan Legislature's top job, as lawmakers prepare to set a new two-year state budget.

Colleagues say Adams, a Republican, has developed a reputation as a patient listener who's more interested in serving the state than a party ideology. Lincoln Sen. Bill Avery, a Democrat, credits Adams for evaluating bills on their merits and making a case for his beliefs.

The 60-year-old Adams assumes the speakership as lawmakers prepare to craft a new two-year state budget. He replaces former Speaker Mike Flood, of Norfolk, who left office because of term limits.
