By: Chris Fankhauser Posted at: 11/14/2012 08:06 AM

(Chadron)-Bryan Brewer of Pine Ridge, S.D., the newly elected president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, will speak at Chadron State College.

Brewer, who defeated John Yellow Bird Steele by 138 votes during last week’s election, will speak Tuesday, Nov. 20 in the Student Center ballroom at 11 a.m. The presentation is open to the public free of charge.

Born and raised in Pine Ridge, Brewer graduated from Oglala Community School in 1965 and earned a degree from Black Hills State University in 1976. He served as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

Brewer is the former principal of Pine Ridge High School and has more than 30 years of experience in education. He also has taught history and cultural studies and served five years on the South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors.

He was recently honored by the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce for his work as founder and director of the Lakota National Invitational Tournament, which has grown to be the largest Native American high school basketball tournament in the United States. The tournament, which occurs in Rapid City each December, is in its 36th year and was featured in Sports Illustrated's 50th Anniversary Issue.
