(S.D.)-Attorney General Warns About Potential Sandy Scammers

By: Roxie Graham-Marski Posted at: 11/06/2012 10:24 AM
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Attorney General Marty Jackley is warning South Dakotans to be on guard for scammers purporting to collect money to help victims in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

Jackley says such behavior is typical after a disaster, and one of the most common traits scammers will use is high-pressure sales tactics.

He suggests that residents verify the legitimacy of a nonprofit organization and its nonprofit status, and consider giving only to charitable organizations with a strong history of providing disaster relief.

Jackley says donors should not respond to unsolicited emails or text messages. Instead, they should go directly to recognized charities or aid organizations.

Those looking to donate should write checks instead of giving cash.
