(Wyo.)-Fourteen Workers Dead This Year, High Workplace Death Rate

By: Roxie Graham-Marski Posted at: 10/05/2012 10:28 AM
CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - A state official says 14 workers have died in Wyoming so far this year.

State workplace epidemiologist Mack Sewell says four each died in agriculture and transportation, three died in oil and gas industry-related incidents, two in construction and one in general industry.

He says of the four killed in the transportation field, one had a blood-alcohol level double the legal limit and two weren't wearing safety restraints.

If the trend holds steady for the next few months, this year's fatalities will likely fall under the 29 workers killed on the job in 2011.

Sewell presented the numbers at the fourth annual safety summit in Casper, hosted by the Wyoming Oil and Gas Industry Safety Alliance.

Wyoming has one of the worst workplace death rates in the nation.
