(Neb.)-Gering Takes No Action Regarding Fireworks Ban
GERING, Neb. (AP) - A debate over banning fireworks in Gering because of dry conditions has fizzled.
The City Council called a special meeting on Friday after hundreds of comments of social media and websites. About 70 people attended the meeting, but no significant support for a fireworks ban was voiced.
The Council opted to take no action.
Councilman Dan Smith says banning fireworks in the city would just move them out to the rural areas where it's even drier. Other council members opposed enacting a ban just five days before the Fourth of July holiday, saying it wasn't fair to vendors.
Councilwoman Julie Morrison says local officials are prepared to deal with fire dangers from fireworks and other sources, as they have done in the past.
