(S.D.)-FBI Says It Won't Reopen Pine Ridge Reservation Cases

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - An FBI spokesman says the agency won't
reopen investigations into the deaths of more than 50 people on
South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation during the 1970s.
Leaders of the Oglala Sioux tribe had requested that the FBI
re-investigate those deaths and what they believe are additional
unsolved murders since then. They say the cases were insufficiently
investigated.
But FBI spokesman Kyle Loven says the cases won't be
reopened without new information. Loven's statement to The
Associated Press was the government's first public response to the
request.
A 2000 FBI report stated the bureau was right in closing the
cases, even in situations where no one had been arrested for a
death deemed unnatural.
