Madeline was born Klara Magdalena Bruegger to Fred and Martha Bruegger on September 14, 1927, at her family’s homestead ranch east of Node, Wyoming. She was the first generation of her family to be born in the United States. She graduated from Lusk High School and attended Business College in Denver, Colorado for one year before moving home to be her father’s ranch hand. Madeline married Melvin Grote of Harrison, Nebraska in November of 1952. Madeline and Melvin had five children. They resided on a ranch north of Harrison until 1969 when they moved the Thirty-Three Ranch south of Harrison. Madeline was instrumental in the Grote family ranching operation and could work cattle and ride horses as well as any man. Madeline was a ranch woman through and through, until the day she died.
Madeline had several hobbies. Madeline cared for her flock of chickens, ducks, and guineas, plus she raised a large garden. She was an expert in knitting and crocheting. She made many afghans for her friends and family and won awards at the Sioux County Fair for her handiwork. She enjoyed playing cards with her close friends on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Madeline was loved by her family, friends, and community. She will be greatly missed by all.
