A memorial has been established in Bert’s name to benefit the Oelrichs Rodeo Club.
Robert Alan Schnose, ‘Bert’ to all of his friends, age 48, of Oelrichs, SD, lost a long hard battle to colon cancer on June 7, 2013, at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
Bert was born November 10, 1964, to Vernon and Mary (Shaffer) Schnose in Rapid City. His life was considered a miracle from the very beginning, being born two months premature. When he finally came home, he joined his big brother, Tom, on the family’s ranch south of Hot Springs.
Bert attended his early school years at the Maitland country school, through the eighth grade, and completed his high school education in Hot Springs, graduating in 1983. Bert loved the ranching life, and continued to help his dad, ‘Vernie’ on the home place, until his dream to have his own operation became a reality in 1988. Bert leased several different places throughout the Oral area, and south of Hot Springs but in 1994, became a landowner, purchasing the Whetstone place, west of Oelrichs.
Bert was an accomplished team roper, earning a trip to the National High School Finals in Douglas, WY, in 1983, and placing 2nd overall in the Little Britches Finals that same year. He possessed a natural talent for roping, being known for his “reaching technique” to nail the fast ones! His rodeo hobby took a back seat when he became self-employed, but he was always a favorite to watch in the branding pens as well. Many people will remark their fondest memory of Bert was with a rope in one hand and a beer in the other! Bert was a hard worker, but knew the value of a little fun as well!
In the spring of 1998, Bert met Kim (McFarland). Branding season rolled around, and she offered to cook for his branding. When he discovered she could cook, it was all over!!! They were married on June 12, 1999, and have been blessed with two awesome kids, Mykelsi (14) and Clay (11). Being a father was one of Bert’s finest attributes, and one of his proudest accomplishments. He was so proud of Mykelsi’s ability with the horses, calling her “The Horse Whisperer” and Clay was “better help on the tractor than many grown men” he would say.
