04/17/2012 - Imogene (Castle) Mikesell

Funeral services for Imogene (Castle) Mikesell will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron with Dr. Russ Seger officiating. Reception to follow at 12:00 p.m. at the American Legion in Chadron. She will be laid to rest at the Nebraska Veteran’s Cemetery of Alliance at approximately 2:00 p.m.
Imogene Gay Soucek was born August 23, 1928 to Fred and Sylvia Soucek in Orchard, Nebraska. She grew up on a small farm ten miles north of Verdigre, Neb. during the time of the Great Depression. Following her high school graduation, she attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and earned an Associate’s degree in Commercial Education. Once she obtained her degree, she was hired by the C&NW railroad to work as a clerk in Norfolk, Neb. In 1960, she moved to Chadron with her first husband, Wilford (Bill) and two young sons, John and Steve.
In 1969, she began working for the C&NW railroad Credit Union as secretary, treasurer, and manager. She also served on the Board of Directors. Imogene was an active participant in the expansion of the Credit Union in 1985 when the decision was made to include membership to employees of other professions. In 1987, she also contributed to the bank’s transition to become what is now Chadron Federal Credit Union. She was a highly-respected businesswoman throughout the community even after her retirement in 1990.
For many years, she was involved in many organizations including The American Legion Auxiliary, the Ladies Auxiliary to the V.F.W., Eastern Star, BPO Does, and the Rebekah Lodge. While she served in many positions for these organizations, she provided service as their musician as well. She was quite an accomplished pianist and always enjoyed sharing her gift with everyone. She also found delight in her garden, travelling and camping. Her most important and cherished hobby was supporting her children through their activities in school. After they were grown, she made every effort to attend and support all of her grandchildren’s school events.
Four years after the untimely death of her first husband, Bill, Imogene remarried Theodore Mikesell in 1988. They lived happily in the countryside of Chadron until her relocation to Highland Park in Alliance, where she passed peacefully in her sleep the morning of April 12, 2012.
She was preceded in death by her parents Fred & Sylvia Soucek of Verdigre, NE and her first husband Wilford “Bill” Castle of Chadron.
Survivors include husband Ted of Chadron, Sons John Castle of Guernsey WY and Steve (Janet) Castle of Alliance, Grandchildren Andrew (Whitney) of Roanoke WV, Jessica Cutshall of Lincoln NE, Katie Reed of Phoenix AZ, Ashley (Jared) Hinker of Bayard NE, Stephen Castle of Fort Collins CO, Alicia (Mark) Green of Kimball NE, and David (Tonya) Castle of Laramie WY. She also had five great-grandchildren, Anthony Castle, Tyler and Savannah Cutshall, Cameron Hinker, and Jace Castle.
