08/17/2013 - 100th Anniversary of the Return of the Bison to Wind Cave(8/16 & 17)
Friends of Wind Cave National Park (FOWC) and Wind Cave National Park (WCNP) are celebrating the return of the bison to Wind Cave 100 years ago on August 16 & 17, 2013 in Hot Springs, South Dakota.
The event begins Friday, August 16th at WCNP Visitor Center at 7:00 PM. Tom Farrell, Chief of Interpretation, will present a program “The return of the bison: the decision that shaped Wind Cave National Park” and then the award-winning movie "The Vanishing Prairie" at the Visitor Center.
On Saturday, August 17th at 9:00 AM, a tour/hike entitled “Exploring the Past: A Visit to the Forgotten Wind Cave National Game Preserve,” will be offered at no charge.
Also on Saturday, there will be an outdoor art show honoring the bison in Hot Springs at the Mueller Center. A star quilt by Freda Goodsell will be raffled off. There will be food vendors, displays, and activities for children and adults culminating with an evening show at 7:00 PM by Jack Gladstone, Montana’s Blackfeet Troubadour. Tickets for the quilt and Jack Gladstone will be available at the Wind Cave bookstore, Black Hills Books & Treasures, the Chamber of Commerce and the website (www.friendsofwindcavenp.org) in July.
This is a fundraiser for the Friends of Wind Cave National Park (FOWC) group. Funds from these activities will be used to improve and preserve the recently acquired Sanson Ranch addition and for upgrading exhibits at the park visitor center.
